Mr. Kevin Turley

K. V. Turley is a film critic and writer who worked in the film industry for a number of years. He writes the Faith on Film column for the St. Austin Review published in the United States. He has also written many articles for Catholic publications such as National Catholic Register. Catholic World Report, Crisis, Catholic Herald and The Tablet.

“St. Thomas More, Bonnie & Clyde and the Birth of New Hollywood”

(1967 was a pivotal year in Hollywood. Two films were at the centre of this transformation. One depicts a saint, the other tells a sordid tale of bank robbers. The films represent opposing philosophies, not just of filmmaking but also of the culture in which they were made. In their different ways they represent old Hollywood then dying and the New Hollywood about to move into the ascendant)

This weekend

Thanks to Canon Wiley for offering All Saints and All Souls Masses for us at St. Joseph's, Bradford. The All Souls Day Solemn High Mass offered by Mgr. Smith assisted by Fathers Aladics and Crawley accompanied by members of the St. Austin singers was a sublime experience and there is  to be another Solemn High Mass on Friday 7th. December at St. Austin's, Wakefield.

Sunday's Mass is of the fourth remaining after the Epiphany and we have two Masses:

On Saturday there will be a sung Mass in the Ordinariate Rite in honour of St. Winefride at St. Joseph's, Bradford at 3.00 p.m.

Christ the King

In the 1962 calendar this weekend is the feast of Christ the King, as this  always falls on the last Sunday of October. We also have the reward of gaining an extra hour in bed on Sunday morning. Please remember that BST ends at 2.00 a.m. on Sunday and to put the clock back.

The torchlight procession at Batley on Monday was a great witness to the Faith and was touchingly referred to as the Lourdes of the North by the Bishop in his address before the crowd in the Market Square. Later His Lordship gave Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament in the church following the procession.


Tuesday provided a very informative evening at the first of this cycle's Cathedral Lectures. Ian Wilson spoke widely and expertly about the Shroud of Turin and it was good to see such a large turnout.

A very busy few days

The next few days will be very busy for traditionally minded Catholics and this post sums up the events in a bulletin fashion.

On Monday there is the traditional Batley Torchlight Procession starting at Batley Market Place at 7.30 p.m. and then processing to St. Mary's Church for Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The Bishop will be in attendance.

Mr. Ian Wilson

Ian Wilson is a retired freelance author specializing in researching historical mysteries, particularly ones with a religious slant. He graduated in History from Magdalen College, Oxford University. After converting to the Catholic Church in 1972, he then wrote a book on the Turin Shroud. The book became a best-seller both in the UK and USA, was translated into nine languages, and spawned a TV documentary, Silent Witness, co-scripted by him, that won a BAFTA award. A later book Jesus: The Evidence was similarly a bestseller. In 1994 his Shakespeare: The Evidence, arguing that Shakespeare was a crypto-Catholic, was also successful. Ian Wilson lives in Brisbane, Australia.

“The Turin Shroud: New Facts and a New Historical Theory”

(This lecture will directly challenge the widely accepted 1988 carbon dating “verdict” that the Turin Shroud is a medieval fake.  After a brief review of the Shroud image’s still unexplained photographic properties, its anatomical accuracies, its convincingness as a two-thousand-year-old textile, and the unsuitable location from which the carbon dating sample was taken, two hitherto overlooked mid-fourteenth century manuscripts will be presented shedding dramatic new light on the French knight Geoffroi de Charny, allegedly the Shroud’s first European owner)

 

On Saturday 6th October the embryonic Leeds Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham will hold its second Mass in this diocese, the first having been a couple of weeks ago at the Cathedral. I was immediately impressed with the beauty of the language and the ritual, the latter of which any EF Mass attendee would immediately recognise. The  Mass will be at our own St. Joseph's, Pakington Street at 3.00 p.m. Fr. Stafford from Sheffield will be the celebrant.

Please do anything you can to offer your time for any of these events which a lot of good people spend a lot of their time organising and ultimately for the glory of God. As this Sunday's Gospel tells us - many are called but few are chosen.

Reminder that there will be the Torchlight Procession in Batley on Monday 1st. October. starting at 7.30 p.m. in the market place at Batley.

Batley & Pentecost XVII

There will be Mass at St. Mary's Batley at 6.00 p.m. on Wednesday 19th September which Fr. Hall will offer again. The parish secretary has e-mailed to say she will ask Father Hall to make this a regular Mass.

The traditional Batley Torchlight Procession returns this year following the break last year because of repairs to the roof of the church.

The procession will begin at Batley Market Square at 7.30 p.m. and go from there to St. Mary of the Angels church. His Lordship the Bishop will attend the event. This is on the first Monday of October, so there will be a future reminder.

Pentecost XV

This weekend is the fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost and St. Luke's Gospel records the widow of Nain whom the Lord raises from death.

As the summer draws to an end there are several high Masses planned before Christmas. Already preparations are underway for the annual Requiem for previous bishops at the Cathedral in November. Again this will be a Solemn Mass. I shall produce a fuller and detailed list shortly.

* Anybody wishing to attend the event in York on Saturday by public transport is advised that a strike has very much limited the accessibility by railway to York station at the usual frequent and regular times. Mass is at 12.10 p.m. at St Wilfrid's but this year pilgrims are gathering at the Bar Convent at 10.30 a.m.  i.e. before the Mass.

A requiem and a reminder

It was a great privilege to attend the requiem Mass of Fr. John Abberton today at the Cathedral in Leeds. The principle celebrant was Bishop Stock and the homily was delivered by Fr. Kieron Walker of Shipley who spoke very movingly on the priesthood as Fr. Abberton had requested in his will.
Many regular attendees at the EF Mass and celebrants of same were at the Mass.

I was reminded after the Mass that there will be the annual pilgrimage to York on Saturday,  details of which I have lifted from the Latin Mass Middlesbrough blog.

The pilgrimage in honour of St Margaret Clitherow and the Martyrs of York will take place on Saturday, 1st September.

Pilgrims should assemble at the Bar Convent at 10.30am for a 10.45 departure on foot for Ouse Bridge, where Margaret Clitherow was executed, and The Shambles, where she lived and a house has been made into a shrine to her.

The procession will continue to St Wilfrid's Church where there will be Mass in the Extraordinary Form at 12.10pm.  Benediction will follow.

Please remember my brother in law who died suddenly on Thursday morning. It has been a terrible shock to my wife and her mother.

On a much happier note this week marks the 55th wedding anniversary of  Mike and Ann Murphy & the sixtieth of Michael and Agnes Rutherford.
Mike plays the organ and cantors at many of our Masses. Agnes was the LMS rep for many years in this diocese in more troubled times, as far as the liturgy went. She paved the way after Bishop Wheeler's retirement for subsequent reps to walk smoothly to any of the bishops thereafter.

I am sure I speak for all who know these good people in wishing them well on these milestones and every joy and happiness for the future.

Mr and Mrs Rutherford are celebrating their anniversary on Wednesday 22nd. August at Sacred Heart Broughton with Mass at 10.30 a.m. 
There will also be Mass at St. Mary's, Batley at 6.00 p.m. on Wednesday. Fr. Hall will be the celebrant.

[I have only very recently been informed that the Mass at Broughton Hall is now usually at 10.00 a.m. on weekdays and at 10.30 a.m. on Saturdays. I shall change the sidebar accordingly.]

Of your charity...

A good and faithful servant

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Fr. John Abberton of this Diocese who died last evening in Munich.
Fr. Abberton was a very devoted priest and learned to say the Old Mass about eleven years ago under the tuition of Fr. Parfitt. He was a member of the Marian Movement of Priests and the diocesan exorcist. He will be missed by many people. May he rest in peace.

We've just returned from a very hot Germany where we were able to observe the feast of St Ignatius in Cologne. The very fine little church (which looks like it was the chapel of some educational establishment and now defunct) in the Chlodwigplatz district is called Maria Hilf (Maria auxiliatrice) and is under the care of the FSSP.

The liturgy was exactly as it is celebrated at Broughton Hall except that the third confiteor was included which I have seen for many years in Germany along with some sort of overhead projector which shines a hymn number onto the east wall from the choir loft.
This was probably revered as progress in the post-war past and now looks rather quaint just as the third confiteor sounded.

We have two Masses this Sunday for the tenth after Pentecost (or Pontefract as our late great friend Mgr McGuire used to say).

We have at least two Masses in this diocese on August 15th and there will be the Requiem for the Markenfield family members at Markenfield Hall on August 18th at 11.00 a.m. Details and reminders nearer the times.

I hear from Father Hall that the recent Mass at Batley went very well. Watch this space. 

The Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham comes to Leeds

I am delighted to announce that the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham is coming to our diocese and as part of its initial activities involve a High Mass according to its Missal in mid September. Further regular activity will be at St. Joseph's in Bradford, details of which I shall post in due course. I wish the Ordinariate every success here and in other dioceses.

Forthcoming Masses at Markenfield Hall

I am very pleased to announce that we have two Masses scheduled over the summer months at Markenfield Hall just south of Ripon in the beautiful medieval chapel. The postcode is HG4 3AD.

The first Mass is later this month on July 12th at 6.00 p.m. and will be a missa cantata. The celebrant for this Mass is Fr. Parfitt.

On August 18th at 11.00 a.m. there will be the annual sung Mass of Requiem for the members of the Markenfield family who suffered terribly for the Faith following the Rising of the North in 1569. As usual the celebrant for the Mass will be Fr. Creighton-Jobe of the London Oratory with the chant provided by monks of Ampleforth Abbey.
