Lent II

Image result for transfiguration of jesus christ

This week has been a spiritually uplifting occasion. Good numbers of people have attended the Masses, confessions and moreover the superbly delivered talks about the Seven Sacraments given by Fr. Michael Hall. I have learned much this week when many eyes, ears, mouths, car doors, confessional doors and hearts have been opened for the love of the teaching of our Lord and the Church. I hope anybody who attended felt uplifted and fortified by their attendance.

Thanks to all the clergy, musicians, servers and staff at St. Joseph's for making this a memorably spiritual exercise for Lent.

This Sunday is the second Sunday of Lent and we have two Masses:

11.00 a.m. Sacred Heart Chapel, Broughton Hall, Skipton
12.30 p.m. St. Joseph's, Pakington Street, Bradford (missa cantata)

The Gospel is the beautiful account of the Transfiguration in both forms of the Mass.

Confessions are available at all EF Masses

Mid Mission Week

Image result for extreme unction
Already we are half way through our Mission week at St. Joseph's and Fr. Hall has provided plenty of food for thought, as one lady remarked after Monday's session. Tonight after Mass Father will address the Sacrament of Unction of the sick.
Please do make a special lenten effort to attend the Masses and talks. Mass begins at 7.00 p.m. and tomorrow we have a Solemn High Mass for the feast of the Chair of St. Peter. This will be only the second Solemn Mass  at St. Joseph's since the changes. Fr. Hall will speak about the Sacraments of Matrimony and Orders.

Lent I and this week

Image result for first sunday of lent

This weekend is the first Sunday of Lent and its Gospel is the temptation of Christ by the devil.
We have three Masses:

8.00 a.m. Leeds Cathedral, Cookridge Street, Leeds
11.00 a.m. Sacred Heart, Broughton Hall, Skipton
12.30 p.m. St. Joseph's, Pakington Street, Bradford

There was a very pleasing attendance at St. Joseph's on Ash Wednesday which I hope will be replicated at the coming week's Mission at St. Joseph's.

Fr. Hall is taking as his theme the Seven Sacraments.

On Monday Father will address the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Starts at 7.00 p.m. with Low Mass followed by the talk. There will be an opportunity for questions following each talk.
On Tuesday we shall start at 6.30 p.m. with Ordinary Form Mass followed by a talk on Baptism and Confirmation. This fits in with the regular parish schedule.
On Wednesday we start at 7.00 p.m. with Low Mass and then a discourse on the Sacrament of the Sick or Unction.
On Thursday there will be a Solemn High Mass at 7.00 p.m. followed by teaching on Holy Orders and Matrimony.
On Friday there will be Low Mass at 7.00 p.m. followed by Father's treatment of the Sacrament of Penance.

Cathedral Lecture

Wednesday 7th February 2018
7.00 p.m. Wheeler Hall, Leeds Cathedral

Dr. Anthony McCarthy

Author of Ethical Sex: Sexual Choices and Their Nature and Meaning (2016). Articles in several journals including New Blackfriars, Chronicles, and Culture Wars.

“Gender Theory: Some Philosophical Reflections

(Although any kind of sexual behaviour presupposes a certain reproductive polarity of sexual organs, the term ‘gender’ has become increasingly associated with conceptions of sex and sexuality removed from any clear procreative referent. Questions of identity arise not only with same sex attracted people but with those wishing to 'transition' from one gender to another, making rational discourse difficult. As with earlier disputes over abortion and sterilization, gender reassignment calls into question traditional concepts of medicine and of respect for human dignity.)
