Triduum photos

Confirmation

Image result for confirmation
So far I have received three requests for children to be confirmed according to the books of 1962 and I shall contact the bishop about this before the end of the week. If you wish for your child to be confirmed please let me know so that you may be added to the list.

It has been most gratifying to learn of people's positive reactions to the recent Sacred Triduum at the Leeds University chaplaincy. Some people who had not experienced the ceremonies in this Rite were deeply moved by the its ritual and the incisive sermons delivered by Fr. Hall.  Father Kravos has also written to me to thank us for the collection for the holy places on Good Friday, which realised just under £100.

Low Sunday

Masses for Quasimodo Sunday or Divine Mercy Sunday are as follows:

11.00 a.m. Missa cantata at Sacred Heart chapel, Broughton Hall, Skipton
3.00 p.m. Low Mass at St. Joseph's, Pontefract Road, Castleford.

This is perhaps a wonderful opportunity to go to confession in this Year of Mercy and I'm sure either of the celebrants will hear confessions at call.

I was very pleased to see that the new Leeds Diocesan Website features a separate tab advertising the times of Mass in the Extraordinary Form and this blog, just as the Bishop promised it would be when I first met him.
It is under the Churches tab   http://www.dioceseofleeds.org.uk/churches/extraordinary-form/

Surprise

We have just returned from a few days away looking at Roman museums and ruins in Chester and Wroxeter. I was very surprised to find a prominent northern priest of liberal disposition saying the old Mass at an ecumenical centre (former  Anglican church) near Newport wearing a blue kimono and sitting cross-legged throughout the liturgy (versus populum before a tea tray) whilst a Sri Lankan gentleman played the sitar. The "sermon" was given by a United Reformed lady pastor who spoke about strength in unity whilst alluding also to her husband's double glazing business. Val and Russ (as they were called) are keen to develop links with other faith groups and already have contact with some Zoroastrians and a Rastafarian organization in Wolverhampton. It's a funny old world.

HAPPY EASTER!

Masses for Easter Sunday:

Broughton Hall, Sacred Heart Chapel, 11.30 a.m.
Castleford, St Joseph's, 3.00 p.m.

Many thanks to everybody who made our Triduum such a success again this year, especially to the indefatigable Fr. Hall whose preaching was as potent and smart as ever, the servers, singers and all those who attended. God bless you all.

HOLY WEEK

Image result for holy week
The time of year when we begin to recall the most sacred events in the history of the Church are once again upon us.
The times of the Masses for the whole week from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday are listed below. Please note there are some differences to the usual schedule.

Palm Sunday                                      (No Cathedral Mass)
Sacred Heart, Broughton Hall, Skipton         11.00 a.m. ( singing and procession)
St. Joseph’s, Pontefract Road, Castleford.      3.00 p.m. (Low)

Monday                  Sacred Heart, Broughton Hall, Skipton.          9.30 a.m.
Tuesday                  Sacred Heart, Broughton Hall, Skipton.          9.30 a.m.

Spy Wednesday     Sacred Heart, Broughton Hall, Skipton.          9.30 a.m.

Holy Thursday       Sacred Heart, Broughton Hall, Skipton.          5.00 p.m.
Notre Dame,  Leeds University chaplaincy, St. Mark's Avenue, Leeds, 7.30 p.m                                   with repose of the Blessed Sacrament and adoration until 9.15 p.m. (Reminder                                      that adoration continues after this time at the Cathedral).

Good Friday           Notre Dame,  Leeds University chaplaincy, St. Mark's Avenue, Leeds, 3.00 p.m.                                  -with the traditional collection for the holy places.

Holy Saturday        Notre Dame, Leeds University chaplaincy, St. Mark's Avenue, Leeds, 3.00 p.m.
(to enable us to have the ceremony sung and followed by missa cantata.) Thanks                                  again to Mr. Murphy for agreeing to this.

Easter Sunday         Sacred Heart, Broughton Hall, Skipton.          11.00 p.m.  (With singing)
                                  St. Joseph’s, Pontefract Road, Castleford.        3.00 p.m.
                                                              (No Mass at Clayton)

I joined the Latin Mass Society in the very early 1980s. At that time the very best that the above could have read (but only very seldom did) would have registered only two "public" Masses in one week on consecutive days.
Yet, in context, Bishop Wheeler never refused permission for public celebration of the "old" Mass. At that time people came from near and far for the festive celebrations at Killingbeck Cemetery chapel for the first Mass of  Christmas and the Easter Vigil. This has continued to be the case.

Well over thirty years later we have a different bishop who not only willingly accepts celebration of the Extraordinary Form (regularly offered at his request in the cathedral) but who is in the process of learning to offer this rite of Mass himself.

Bishop Stock has also agreed that those attached to the older Rites should become a natural and regular part of an easily accessible parish, with freedom to access all of the Sacraments. As I have reported before consultation is now underway to come to a decision before the first Sunday of September.

The first time I met the Bishop he expressed his desire to administer Sacrament of Confirmation for those eligible to receive it.  Please let me know if your child is eligible and you wish the bishop to confer the Sacrament.

In the meantime please consider attending some part of the Triduum at Notre Dame.

Third Sunday of Lent

Masses for this weekend - already the third Sunday of Lent.

Following the astonishingly beautiful Gospel recalling the Transfiguration last week, this Sunday's Gospel is much harder to understand and demands our reading and thinking as well as our hearing, wondering and imagining, I am looking forward to Father Abberton's sermon about this week's readings.

Sunday              Sacred Heart, Broughton Hall, Skipton.                                      11.00 a.m.
                           St. Joseph’s, Pontefract Road, Castleford.                                     3.00 p.m.
                               St. Anthony’s, Bradford Road, Clayton, Bradford. BD14 6HW   4.00 p.m.

Unfortunately I couldn't get to the Mass at Broughton on Friday morning which was offered by Bishop Schneider but our Mr O'Dowd was able to attend and has sent me some photos. When I transfer the images in a compatible format I'll post them on this blog.  Bishop Schneider is in Warrington tomorrow and I look forward to reading what he says.

I only very recently learned of the death of Mrs Winefride Lynch (Pickles) who before her illness was a regular attendee at many of our Killingbeck Masses. May she rest in peace.

Second Sunday in Lent

Masses this weekend are as follows:

Sunday              St. Anne’s Cathedral, Great George Street, Leeds.              8.00 a.m.

                           St. Joseph’s, Pontefract Road, Castleford.                           3.00 p.m.

Following my meeting with the Bishop earlier this week I had a very nice e-mail today from him thanking me for meeting with him, which I found very thoughtful and touching. Watch this space as things unfold for us. Please also try to support our existing Masses. We are again to have the Sacred Triduum at Notre Dame at Easter thanks to Fathers Hall and Kravos.

Bishops, bishops...

Visit of Bishop Athanasius Schneider
With the agreement of Bishop Marcus, Bishop Athanasius Schneider, Auxiliary Bishop of Astana, will be paying a short visit to Broughton Hall on Friday 26 February 2016 and will celebrate the 9.30am Mass in the Extraordinary Form. All are most welcome.

We are of course grateful to Bishop Marcus for giving Mgr Schneider permission to offer Mass in the Diocese at the end of the month and I know people who are going to listen to him speaking in Warrington on Saturday 27th.

Meeting with Bishop Marcus
Today Father Wiley and I again had the pleasure of meeting with the bishop following his recent request to meet with us. I am very pleased to say that I am now working in consultation with the bishop to find a suitable parish which we can call "home" in time for September after the summer clergy moves. The bishop is keen that we have a sense of permanence and this became very clear five minutes into the eighty minute meeting. I am very much looking forward to further discussion with him and will report more details when I have them.

SEPTUAGESIMA

For the moment I am unable to say what is happening - or not happening in Halifax. Please do not set out for Mass at Halifax before further notice.

I had initially believed that there would be no Mass at Clayton in Bradford  on Sunday but a change in Fr. Abberton's circumstances means that there shall actually be Mass there.

Christmas Masses

Why is it that when one thing breaks down everything else seems to follow suit? Internet has been off more than on, the television set stopped working (no real worry there) and my laptop keeps dying which means that I could be "cut off" any minute. It has made for a very frustrating start to the holiday. I am however looking forward to Christ's Mass when we behold the infant child in the crib, pure innocence - but not for us - because in a few weeks we see why that child was nailed to a cross.
All the feasting and jollities aside the Christmas message (but not the occasion) should really leave us feeling uneasy and ready for the lengthening days when we can look at ourselves and forward to the candles of baptismal renewal of the Sacred Vigil, when again beautiful light comes into our night liturgies as the light and life of the Saviour are celebrated. The late Father Cresswell used to say that at Mass we have the Incarnation, Birth, Death, Resurrection and Ascension of Christ before us.

Masses for the Feast are as follows:

Thursday  Christmas Eve
Notre Dame Chapel, Leeds University Chaplaincy, St. Mark's Avenue, Leeds  7.00 p.m.
Sacred Heart Chapel, Broughton Hall, Skipton 11.30 p.m.
Friday      Christmas Day
Sacred Heart Chapel, Broughton Hall, Skipton 11.00 a.m.

NO MASS AT HALIFAX ON SATURDAY

From the Cathedral

By courtesy of John Roberts of Wakefield I am reproducing some of his great photos of Saturday's Mass at Leeds Cathedral where we had a Solemn Requiem Mass for Bishop Wheeler. The present Bishop, Marcus Stock was in attendance and presided. This solemn Mass was the first such since the changes of the late 1960s in the cathedral. In the morning the Bishop had raised a man to the diaconate in the same place.
Mgr Moger and his staff could not have been any more helpful on the day and in the weeks leading up to it. Our schola members gave freely of their time and as ever did us proud. Servers were plentiful and able to enjoy concentrating on the Mass with the deacon and subdeacon doing most of the work. Similarly the clergy - Celebrant Fr. Abberton, Deacon Fr. Kravos, Subdeacon Fr. Wiley, Clergy's M.C. Fr. M. Hall, Bishop's Assistant Priest Fr. Crawley and Mr Cortes the deacon to the Bishop, please may I put on the record my sincere thanks to you and of course to Bishop Stock who despite the novelty of the occasion to him (and the rest of us) was able to soon relax into the occasion with grace and humility. I'm certainly not used to ordering the local ordinary around, but after clergy and servers were blessed by him following the Mass in the sacristy I couldn't resist saying to him it was "a piece of cake".   Joking apart the bishop did add to the calmness of the occasion.
The Bishop has told me before that he is willing to preside or preach at  EF Masses and Sacraments and I was spurred on when he repeated this to me on Saturday and indicated his desire for continued and further involvement in the the extraordinary form.

SOLEMN HIGH MASS WITH BISHOP STOCK

SOLEMN HIGH MASS OF
REQUIEM
in the presence of
Bishop Stock

LEEDS CATHEDRAL
SATURDAY 14. NOVEMBER
4.00 P.M.
For the repose of the soul of Bishop Wheeler

Bishop Wheeler became Bishop of Leeds in 1966 until his retirement in 1985. He was Bishop during the Council and  in its hectic aftermath. Ours was a diocese where sanity and saintliness ruled. Bishop Wheeler was grounded in the Blessed Sacrament and our Lady. He was uniquely generous in his provision of the older form of Mass and as such we owe him a debt of thanksgiving and prayerful remembrance.
