Wednesday is the start of Lent. It is a day of fast and abstinence, but like Good Friday not a day of obligation.

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Marguerite Jennings of Knaresborough and a regular attendee at our Masses along with her husband Austin.
Marguerite died after an illness patiently borne fortified by the rights of Holy Mother Church. May she rest in peace.

Quinquagesima etc.

This weekend is Quinquagesima which means that Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and as such is a day of fast and abstinence.

On Saturday at 3.00 p.m. there will be Mass in the Ordinariate Rite at St. Joseph's.

On Sunday we have two Masses:

12.30 p.m. St. Joseph's, Pakington Street, Bradford
followed by the Baptism of Grace Carole Shackleton at 1.45 p.m.

On Wednesday we have two Masses at Broughton Hall in the morning at 11.00 a.m. and in the evening at St. Joseph's, Bradford at 5.00 p.m. - Ashes will be distributed at both Masses.

Confessions at call. Remember we should be thinking about Easter Duties - Communion and Confession between Ash Wednesday and Trinity Sunday.

Sexagesima

This Sunday is Sexagesima and Lent is getting nearer - the days are certainly lengthening. We have two Masses:

Reminder that there is Mass on Friday for the feast of the Chair of St. Peter at 7.30 p.m. at St. Austin's, Wentworth Terrace, Wakefield.

There will be Mass at 3.00 p.m. next Saturday (2nd March) in the Rite of the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham at St. Joseph's, Bradford.

Septuagesima

This Sunday is the first of the short pre-Lenten season of Septuagesima and we have three Masses:

8.00 a.m. Leeds Cathedral, Great George Street, Leeds
11.00 a.m. Sacred Heart, Broughton Hall, Skipton
12.30 p.m. St. Joseph's, Pakington Street, Bradford

We will not see green vestments again until after Pentecost now.

On Friday there will be a Solemn High Mass at 7.30 p.m. at St. Austin's, Wentworth Terrace, Wakefield. This will be for the feast of the Chair of St. Peter.

Epiphany V

This Sunday marks the fifth Sunday after the Epiphany; Christmas is over and next week is the pre-Lenten feast of Septuagesima and start of the short preparatory season.

On Saturday there is Mass at Broughton Hall at 10.30 a.m. in the E.F and at 3.00 p.m. there is Mass at St. Joseph's, Bradford in the Ordinariate Rite.

Ordinariate Mass

There will be a Mass according to the Ordinariate Rite at St. Joseph's, Pakington Street, Bradford at 3.00 p.m. on Saturday 9th. February.

Epiphany IV

On Friday this week at 7.30 p.m. there will be Low Mass at St. Austin's, Wentworth Terrace, Wakefield.

On Sunday we have two Masses:
11.00 a.m. Sacred Heart, Broughton Hall, Skipton
12.30 p.m. St. Joseph's, Pakington Street, Bradford

On Monday at 9.30 a.m. there will be Mass at St. Joseph's, Martin Street, Brighouse.

Epiphany III and this weekend.

This Saturday at the Cathedral there will be a Solemn High Mass according to the Rite of the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham. The Mass is at 1.30 p.m.

The recently added communion rails in the Lady chapel of the Cathedral are a welcome addition. 

Reminder that there is Mass in the EF at Broughton Hall every Saturday at 10.30 a.m.

Sunday is the third after the Epiphany and its Gospel recalls the healing of the centurion's boy.

On Monday 4th February there will be Mass at 9.30 a.m. at St. Joseph's, Brighouse. This follows the Mass there on the last day of 2018. 

Arrangements are now underway for the Sacred Triduum and details will follow.

Epiphany II

 

This Sunday is the second Sunday after the Epiphany and we have three Masses:

8.00 a.m. Leeds Cathedral, Cookridge Street, Leeds

11.00 a.m. Sacred Heart, Broughton Hall, Skipton

12.30 a.m. St. Joseph's, Pakington Street, Bradford

On Saturday 26th. January there will be another Solemn High Mass in the Ordinariate Rite. I hope it is as beautiful as the last one. This will be at Leeds Cathedral at 1.30 p.m. Reminders to follow.

Another Mass in the EF in Brighouse is being finalised this weekend for early February and I'll post details next week.

Sunday is the Feast of the Holy Family and we have two Masses:

Congratulations to Adam and Regina Shackleton who are regular worshippers at St. Joseph's. Regina gave birth on Thursday to a little girl, Grace. Deo gratias.  

Cathedral lecture

Apologies for my late posting of this regarding the last in this cycle's Cathedral lectures. I don't know how this slipped my mind.
This evening at 7.00 p.m. in the Wheeler Hall at the Cathedral in Leeds world renowned scholar  Professor Richard Rex will deliver the last in this series of lectures.

Professor Richard Rex

Richard Rex is Professor of Reformation History in the University of Cambridge and Polkinghorne Fellow in Theology and Religious Studies, Queens’ College, Cambridge. An expert in the history of the Tudors and of the Reformation, he is the author of several books,  including The Theology of John Fisher (1991) and The Tudors (2006). His most recent book is The Making of Martin Luther (2017).

“The Church and Change: Observations on the Present Crisis in Catholicism”

(As the ramifications of the sexual abuse crisis threaten to overwhelm national hierarchies and even to touch the curia itself, the Church is facing its deepest crisis in governance since the Great Schism (1378-1417). And as Catholic teaching on marriage is challenged in the name of a “new paradigm”, the Church is facing its deepest crisis in doctrine since the Reformation. Change must come, and change will come. But what must change, and what must not? And how shall we hold onto the faith in the years to come?) Many thanks to John Beaumont for organising the lectures again. Once more these have proved to be a great source of food for thought and inspiration and I look forward to next year's cycle.

It was very pleasing to see so many people at our first Mass at St. Joseph's, Brighouse on Monday. Fr. Hall assures me that there was a lot of interest and positive comments passed about the Mass and I am sure that this will become a regular venue for the Mass as we get into the new year.

Sunday with the Octave of Christmas

This has been very much a week off for us hence the late posting.

This weekend is the Sunday within the octave of the Nativity and we have three Masses:

12.30 p.m. St. Joseph's, Pakington Street, Bradford
AND
7.30 p.m. at Wakefield's historic Chantry chapel there will be a sung requiem for Richard Duke of York who was killed on this date in 1460 at the Battle of Wakefield.

On Monday at 10.00 a.m. there will be a Mass at St. Joseph's, Martin Street, Brighouse followed by the Te Deum which has a plenary indulgence attached to it on this day. Thanks to Fr. Hall for this Mass.

Thank you

Just a note to thank everyone who made Jim Carrol's Requiem Mass today such a solemn and moving event. There were several priests and brothers in attendance in the congregation and in white choir. Fr Driver was the celebrant and Messrs Forbester and Burton sang the parts of the Mass.
Today was the first time I have ever witnessed a burial in a Catholic cemetery attached to the parish church.
Marie was adamant that Jim got a great send off.
May Jim rest in peace.

Advent II

This weekend marks the second Sunday of Advent and on Saturday we celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Conception.

Reminder that on Friday we have an anticipated solemn high Mass for the feast of the Immaculate Conception at St. Austin's, Wakefield at 7.30 p.m.

Dr. Brian Sudlow

Brian Sudlow is a lecturer in French at Aston University. His doctorate consisted of a comparative study of G. K. Chesterton and the French writer Alphonse Retté. He is the author of Catholic Literature and Secularisation in France and England: 1880-1914 (2011) and of a forthcoming monograph on criticism of technology in France from 1920 to 1958.

“Human Life and Sacred Men: Abortion and Exclusion in Paris and London”

(Abortion has been legal in the U.K. for over fifty years but the medicalisation of this procedure now increasingly erases the ethical discussion of unborn life from public debate. France has walked the same path as the U.K. and stands this year on the brink of passing new bioethical laws that will extend the dispensability of human life from conception to death. The lecture will revisit recent literary, philosophical and theatrical contributions to these debates to examine how treating human life as dispensable is leading us unwittingly towards catastrophe). 

Immaculate Conception

Friday 7th December is the feast of St. Ambrose but we are having an anticipated Mass of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. This will be a solemn high Mass at St. Austin's, Wentworth Terrace at 7.30 p.m. and the excellent St. Austin Singers will provide the music. Sacred ministers will be Revv. David Smith, Richard Aladics and Sean Crawley.

You might consider supporting this Mass as part of your advent observance.

Advent I

I have spoken this evening to Marie Carroll, Jim's wife about the funeral arrangements and Jim's requiem in the Old Rite will take place at St. Edward's, Clifford on Tuesday 11th. December at 11.00 a.m. followed by interment in the church's cemetery. 

Jim Carroll RIP

Of your charity please pray for the repose of the soul of Mr. James Carroll who departed this life on Saturday 25th November at his home after a long illness patiently borne. May he rest in peace.
Jim and Marie were regular attenders at our Masses for many years until ill health curtailed their ability to travel.
Jim was always well informed and a loyal son of the Church. Our prayers go to his widow Marie.
Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.

Pentecost XXIV

Apologies for the late posting but my computer died last week but I'm up and running again on my spanking new laptop.

On Saturday (a week earlier than usual) there will be a sung Mass in the Ordinariate Rite at 3.00 p.m. at St. Joseph's, Bradford. The canon of this Mass is a beautiful translation and its language is utterly transcendent.

On Sunday we celebrate the 24th and last Sunday after Pentecost - which means Advent is on the horizon.

SOLEMN REQUIEM - LEEDS CATHEDRAL

The annual Solemn Mass of Requiem for Bishop Wheeler will take place again this Saturday 17th November at 3.00 p.m. with the venue being the Cathedral. 

Last year Bishop Marcus was the celebrant, this year the celebrant is Fr. Crawley whose role as celebrant at a solemn Mass is a first for him. A couple of years ago Fr. Abberton (R.I.P.) was the celebrant and he is pictured above at the arrival of the foot of the altar.

Thanks as always to the Cathedral Dean Mgr. Moger who always hosts this Mass superbly with his natural affability.

Reminder that there will be Low Mass on Sunday at 8.00 a.m. in the Lady Chapel of the Cathedral.

Remembrance Sunday

This Sunday marks one hundred years since the end of the First World War and all of the appalling horrors which that entailed for millions of people across the globe.

This Sunday we have two Masses:

12.30 p.m. St. Joseph's, Pakington Street, Bradford - Sung Mass of Requiem, followed by prayer at the Parish War Memorial.

Next Saturday 17th November we have a Solemn High Requiem Mass at the Cathedral in Leeds for Bishop Wheeler at 3.00 p.m.
