A delightful afternoon

Thanks to Fr. Aladics for offering Mass this afternoon with about 30 parishioners at his parish's beautiful church of St. Ignatius Loyola for this weekend's patronal feast.
Father was more than ably accompanied by members of the Rudgate singers who sang the solemn Salve at the end of Mass as the relics of Saints Ignatius, Aloysius Gonzaga, Stanislaus Kostka, Francis Xavier, Peter Canisius and other prominent Jesuits were venerated.
In his sermon Fr. Aladics recalled the original mission territory in the area which much predates the current church of  the early 1930s and he spoke warmly of his early Jesuit predecessors who helped to make this part of Yorkshire a source of God's own grace.
Following Mass there was a BBQ in the presbytery grounds with excellent company, food and drink expertly prepared and served by Father himself. An excellent touch was the Spanish salad "Crown of Thorns", consisting of lettuce, red onions and pomegranate seeds with a light glossy dressing.

Father offers Mass at 8.00 a.m. each Tuesday at the lady altar in the church and is more than agreeable to stepping up the number of Masses he already offers in the EF.

The re-ordering of this church is of the most tasteful I have ever seen (regardless of what it originally might have looked like) and there has been no loss of balance. The entire light building draws the eye to the tabernacle and the wall crucifix.  To the rear of the church there is a garden of remembrance for stillborn and neonatal babies.

Please remember Masses tomorrow at Broughton and Castleford.

This weekend

Masses this weekend including Pentecost XI

Saturday
Sacred Heart chapel, Broughton Hall, Skipton, 9.30 a.m.
St Ignatius, Storrs Hill Road, Ossett, NOON  (Missa cantata)

Sunday
Sacred Heart chapel,  Broughton Hall, Skipton, 11.00 a.m.
St. Joseph's, Pontefract Road, Castleford, 3.00 p.m.

Next week I am taking my son to the amazing Roman-Germanic Museum in Cologne where there is an exhibition of Roman glass.
Last year the special exhibition was medicine in the Roman world. One archaeological dig in Cologne just beside the cathedral had not only revealed the existence of some ancient dental instruments but also an enameled tin bucket full of eggs from the Second World War, all perfectly preserved.
It is amazing that beneath the streets of  the oft besieged Cologne there is still a maze of  undamaged (and dry) Roman sewers, which lead to extant parts of Roman Cologne. I revel in the fact that something many hundreds years old has continued to exist, albeit underground, and moreover in spite of the horrors inflicted upon it in the mid-twentieth century.

Meanwhile I am working on a plan for a Belgian monastic beer tour before the end of August. It is time for me to use my Flemish/Dutch, which although I did at university as a subsidiary I only rarely use these days.

Pentecost VII

Mass at Markenfield Hall for the Feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour on Monday was a triumph. Singers from Wakefield's St. Austin's sang some beautiful polyphony and the schola sang the plainchant which all added superbly to the ambiance of the little ancient chapel which has been lovingly brought to life again by Lady Deirdre and Mr. Ian Curteis, to whom again we extend our thanks.
The addition of a new artifact, in the form of a distressed carved stone figure of Christ from a crucifix of great antiquity, is most sensitive and touching at many levels. The figure is housed in a little wooden case on the sill below the great east window. Lady Deirdre told me that she had picked it up quite by chance in France.

Masses this Sunday are as follows:

11.00 a.m. Sacred Heart, Broughton Hall, Skipton, sung.
3.00 p.m    St. Joseph's, Pontefract Rd. Castleford,

Please remember the sick in your prayers this month which traditionally is given over to the Precious Blood and remember that every Mass of our lives gives us the chance to worship that life giving Blood shed for us and for many.

Our Lady, health of the sick, pray for us.

Please also of your charity pray for the repose of the soul of Dr Joseph Shaw's mother who died yesterday.
May she rest in peace and may her soul and those of the faithful departed rest in peace.

June 27th notice

The feast day of Our Mother of Perpetual Help is celebrated on June 27th. Under Pope Pius XII's Pontificate, our Mother of Perpetual Succour was designated as the national Patroness of the Republic of Haiti and Almoradi, Spain.

It is also one of the patronal feasts of the diocese of Leeds.

We have again been invited by Lady Deirdre and Mr Ian Curteis to hear a sung Mass in their beautiful medieval chapel at Markenfield Hall, just south of Ripon towards Harrogate on the right hand side. The celebrant is Father Parfitt, to whom thanks are also due. Mass at 6.00 p.m.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

The Bishop has now released information about the future of provision in the diocese of the Extraordinary Form of Mass and I am extremely grateful to him for listening to our request for a permanent home and the suggestions which accompanied it. The Bishop writes:

EXTRAORDINARY FORM RITE OF MASS.  I am making St Joseph’s Church in Bradford a principal church for the celebration of the Extraordinary Form Rite of Mass within the Diocese of Leeds. This will not of course alter or restrict the ability of priests to celebrate the Extraordinary Form in other churches of the diocese but is, rather, a pastoral response to the request from a number of the faithful for a central church that is easily accessible with a celebration at a time on a Sunday that will facilitate a larger congregation of the faithful to attend. It is anticipated that the Mass will be celebrated each Sunday at 12:30pm.

The new venue will be in use for the EF Mass from September by which time a lot of behind the scenes work will be undertaken in drawing up rotas and organising the singing, serving and extra Masses. Please watch this space!
We have, of course, used St. Joseph's on many occasions in recent years when both Canon McCreadie and Fr. Newman were Parish Priests. Indeed the first Solemn High Mass in many years took place there when Canon Boyle was our celebrant assisted by Mgr Smith and Fr. Wiley. Let us pray that our move goes smoothly.

Veni, Sancte Spiritus,
et emitte caelitus
lucis tuae radium.
Veni, pater pauperum,
veni, dator munerum,
veni, lumen cordium.
Consolator optime,
dulcis hospes animae,
dulce refrigerium.
In labore requies,
in aestu temperies,
in fletu solatium.
O lux beatissima,
reple cordis intima
tuorum fidelium.
Sine tuo numine,
nihil est in homine,
nihil est innoxium.
Lava quod est sordidum,
riga quod est aridum,
sana quod est saucium.
Flecte quod est rigidum,
fove quod est frigidum,
rege quod est devium.
Da tuis fidelibus,
in te confidentibu s,
sacrum septenarium.
Da virtutis meritum,
da salutis exitum,
da perenne gaudium.

At a purely linguistic level the Sequence we have at Mass today is straightforward Latin and therein lies its beauty. The depth of its meaning and at the same time the easy and measured simplicity of its expression could hardly be conveyed so beautifully in any other way.
At the same time I have read many approved translations in different prayer books (as well as in English) and therein lies the power of the prayer because it is a pure source of  goodness however the words are received.
Veni Sancte Spiritus!

Busy bees

A flash two day Ofsted monitoring visit and catch up controlled assessments at other schools in speaking and writing components have blighted my life for recent days. I have had no extra time to follow a less hectic and more enjoyable routine. I have neglected to advertise two important events in neighbouring Middlesbrough Diocese on Saturday.
