This week there is an excellent piece in the Universe about the first Mass at St. Joseph's which is well worth a read. I have also just spoken to a gentleman preparing an article for EWTN in this country who was keen to know about the Mass at St. Joseph's.

Should you wish for confession please ask the celebrants at any of our Masses.

I have never been to Coventry but would like to visit there if only to see Epstein's masterful depiction of the triumph of good over evil at the Anglican Cathedral, which was destroyed by Hitler's bombs in WW II.

Holy Michael, Archangel, defend us in the day of battle and be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray and do thou Prince of the heavenly hosts thrust down into hell, Satan and all the wicked spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen

More good news

Father Abberton who has been very ill telephoned me today to say that he is feeling better and would like to resume offering Mass at St. Anthony's, Bradford Road, Clayton on the fourth Sunday of the month. So this Mass will resume on the fourth Sunday of October. Many thanks to Fr. Abberton for this - he really has been through the mill lately. Please remember him in your prayers.
Two Sunday Masses in Bradford in the EF is something I never thought I would live to see.

Pentecost XIX

Our first Low Mass at St. Joseph's, Bradford on Sunday was another triumph with organist accompaniment at points and a couple of vernacular hymns. This was thanks to Mr Richard Niczyperowicz, Richard is another native Bradfordian with an unpronounceable surname and strong family links to St. Joseph's.  Fr. Driver who offered the Mass for our intentions was also much impressed with this joyful lift and I hope Richard will play again for us soon. His father tells me that his repertoire is growing and strengthening all the time and his tutor Mike Murphy is similarly enthusiastic. Well done Richard!

Mike Murphy will be the organist and cantor this Sunday at the 12.30 p.m. Mass at St. Joseph's which will be a Missa cantata.

Mass will also be offered on Sunday at 11.00 a.m. and on Saturday morning at 9.30 at Sacred Heart, Broughton Hall, Skipton.

Pentecost XVIII

This is a three Sunday Mass weekend for the XVIII of Pentecost:

8.00 a.m. Leeds Cathedral, Great George Street, Leeds
11.00 a.m. Sacred Heart, Broughton Hall, Skipton
12.30 p.m. St. Joseph's, Pakington Street, Bradford

I have had a mixed reaction to the photos in the last post. Some people can see all the photos and some cannot. I can see all the pictures on somebody else's computer but not on my daughter's mobile telephone. My techno-nerd friend is still on holiday so I have been unable to seek expert advice. I shall persevere.
This also stymied my attempts to get pictures from a disc with the excellent pictures by John Roberts of the Wakefield Chantry Mass which proved to be embarrassing when an eleven year old child showed me what to do today at school. We were examining blogging language styles at the time.

First Mass at St. Joseph's

It was a great pleasure to have our first Mass at St. Joseph's, Bradford yesterday with an attendance of just under sixty. This was a sung Mass and celebrated by Fr Hall. The newly ordained curate at St. Joseph's, Fr. Whitwell sat in white choir and Fr. Wiley was in the congregation. We were very pleased to find vestments in every colour with matching maniples, veils and burses at the church. The new parish priest and the sacristan were more than helpful. We would now like to concentrate on building up a schola to sing the Mass under the direction of Mike Murphy and a team of additional servers so that we can perform all the liturgical ceremonies with all due dignity. Next Sunday will be Low Mass with Fr. Driver as celebrant.

Tomorrow I shall post pictures of last Thursday's Mass at the chantry chapel taken by Mr John Roberts of Wakefield.

Pentecost XVI

I hope you like the new look and updated blog in preparation for our first regular Sunday Mass at St. Joseph's, Pakington Street, Bradford next week.

In the meantime our only Sunday Mass this weekend is at:

Sacred Heart Chapel, Broughton Hall, nr Skipton, 11.00 a.m. It is of course a sung Mass.

Masses on Sunday will continue at Broughton in addition to those at St. Joseph's.

The holidays are now almost over and for the last six weeks I have been only seldom at home so I shall reply to outstanding e-mails and confirm meetings in the next few days.

Please continue to pray for Fr. Abberton who is still unwell.

The Feast celebrating Our Lady's birthday falls this week on Thursday. Masses at Broughton at 9.30 a,m. and at 7.30 p.m. at the Wakefield chantry chapel, this Mass will be sung. Pentecost XV

Mass for this the fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost is at 11.00 a.m. at Sacred Heart, Broughton Hall, near Skipton.
Preparations are well underway for our Masses at St. Joseph's, Bradford which will start in two weeks.

Sunday Mass

The only Sunday Mass this week is at:
Sacred Heart, Broughton Hall, Skipton at 11.00 a.m.

This is of course the external solemnity of the Assumption of our Blessed Lady.

Last Mass

The first Sunday of August this year marks our last at St Joseph's, Castleford. Since the inception of the Mass each Sunday at 3.00 p.m. and at Bishop Roche's request it has become increasingly clear that a more central location was required and as I reported earlier this year Bishop Stock has named the parish of St. Joseph's in Bradford as a regular place of particular worship at Mass according to the books of 1962 and in addition to the regular and growing scedule . Sadly this means a change of direction and I am sorry that the faithful of  Castleford will be deprived of the form of Sunday worship they have sought out.

Pentecost XII will also be the regular sung 11.30 a.m. Mass at Broughton Hall's Sacred Heart chapel near Skipton.

As I have holiday time next week I shall soon be able to give details of the new schedule for the EF Latin Mass in this diocese from September.

Already I have received inquiries about baptism, first confession, confirmations, marriage and have heard interesting nonsense about the bishop trying to sabotage the whole Latin Mass thing in the diocese.
There is no truth in this ugly rumour.
I believe the Bishop is the last person in the diocese to disapprove of his priests celebrating the Mass in the Extraordinary Form.

A delightful afternoon

Thanks to Fr. Aladics for offering Mass this afternoon with about 30 parishioners at his parish's beautiful church of St. Ignatius Loyola for this weekend's patronal feast.
Father was more than ably accompanied by members of the Rudgate singers who sang the solemn Salve at the end of Mass as the relics of Saints Ignatius, Aloysius Gonzaga, Stanislaus Kostka, Francis Xavier, Peter Canisius and other prominent Jesuits were venerated.
In his sermon Fr. Aladics recalled the original mission territory in the area which much predates the current church of  the early 1930s and he spoke warmly of his early Jesuit predecessors who helped to make this part of Yorkshire a source of God's own grace.
Following Mass there was a BBQ in the presbytery grounds with excellent company, food and drink expertly prepared and served by Father himself. An excellent touch was the Spanish salad "Crown of Thorns", consisting of lettuce, red onions and pomegranate seeds with a light glossy dressing.

Father offers Mass at 8.00 a.m. each Tuesday at the lady altar in the church and is more than agreeable to stepping up the number of Masses he already offers in the EF.

The re-ordering of this church is of the most tasteful I have ever seen (regardless of what it originally might have looked like) and there has been no loss of balance. The entire light building draws the eye to the tabernacle and the wall crucifix.  To the rear of the church there is a garden of remembrance for stillborn and neonatal babies.

Next week I am taking my son to the amazing Roman-Germanic Museum in Cologne where there is an exhibition of Roman glass.
Last year the special exhibition was medicine in the Roman world. One archaeological dig in Cologne just beside the cathedral had not only revealed the existence of some ancient dental instruments but also an enameled tin bucket full of eggs from the Second World War, all perfectly preserved.
It is amazing that beneath the streets of  the oft besieged Cologne there is still a maze of  undamaged (and dry) Roman sewers, which lead to extant parts of Roman Cologne. I revel in the fact that something many hundreds years old has continued to exist, albeit underground, and moreover in spite of the horrors inflicted upon it in the mid-twentieth century.

Meanwhile I am working on a plan for a Belgian monastic beer tour before the end of August. It is time for me to use my Flemish/Dutch, which although I did at university as a subsidiary I only rarely use these days.

There is no Mass at Clayton as Fr. Abberton is still very unwell, please remember him in your prayers.

Next Saturday (July 30th.) we have been invited to the parish patronal celebrations at St Ignatius,37, Storrs Hill Road, Ossett, WF5 0DQ . There will be a sung Mass at noon followed by a BBQ.

Fr. Aladics now offers Mass each Tuesday at 8.00 a.m. at the Lady altar.

Pentecost IX

This weekend we start with a Low Mass at 9,30 a.m.on Saturday morning at Sacred Heart, Broughton Hall near Skipton. Then there is Mass at St Austin's, Wakefield at noon, which is Mgr Smith's "new" parish. This is a solemn high Mass and marks the 20th anniversary of the wonderful Rudgate singers. There is then a sung missa salve sancta parens at 2.00 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist, Cooper Lane, Bradford.

The Cathedral, Cookridge Street. Leeds at 8.00 a.m
Sacred Heart, Broughton Hall, Skipton at 11.00 a.m.
St Joseph's, Pontefract Road, Castleford at 3.00 p.m.

Six public Masses in two days with four celebrants and at least one deacon. We have come a long way in recent time and can only give thanks to Almighty God for this.

Announcement about the new autumn schedule will follow in the next couple of weeks.

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Fr. Michael Krychiwskyj who died last week. Fr. Michael was a good friend to the LMS. He was the Parish Priest at the parish of St. Jeanne Jugan and his body will be received into Our Lady of Lourdes, Leeds on Sunday evening at 6.00 p.m. This will be followed by Rosary and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. On Monday the bishop will be the principal celebrant at the Mass of Requiem at 11.00 a.m. May Fr. Michael's soul rest in peace and may the angels lead him into paradise.

Pentecost VII

Mass at Markenfield Hall for the Feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour on Monday was a triumph. Singers from Wakefield's St. Austin's sang some beautiful polyphony and the schola sang the plainchant which all added superbly to the ambiance of the little ancient chapel which has been lovingly brought to life again by Lady Deirdre and Mr. Ian Curteis, to whom again we extend our thanks.
The addition of a new artifact, in the form of a distressed carved stone figure of Christ from a crucifix of great antiquity, is most sensitive and touching at many levels. The figure is housed in a little wooden case on the sill below the great east window. Lady Deirdre told me that she had picked it up quite by chance in France.

Please remember the sick in your prayers this month which traditionally is given over to the Precious Blood and remember that every Mass of our lives gives us the chance to worship that life giving Blood shed for us and for many.

Of your charity please remember two of our diocesan priests who are both suffering from serious illnesses, Fr. Krykiewski who is parish priest at Our Lady of Lourdes, Leeds and Fr. Abberton, the parish priest at St. Anthony's, Clayton, Bradford. I have already suspended the Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes and I am afraid that I shall have to do the same at Clayton as well until further notice.
