Retreat for Priests with Fr Armand de Malleray FSSP - October 5-9 in England

Clergy Retreat on 5-9 October 2026, Stonyhurst, England

Topic: The priest at the altar as sacrificer

In this retreat, Fr de Malleray will reflect on the liturgical role of the priest and the sacrificial nature of his ministry at the altar.

Drawing on the Church’s long-standing liturgical tradition as expressed in the Traditional Rite of the Roman Church, the retreat will offer a deeper awareness of the Mass as making present the Sacrifice of the Cross.

The retreat will be an opportunity to gain a further understanding of this central aspect of the Mass and of the structure of the Traditional Rite, serving also as an enrichment for the celebration of the New Rite.

For: Any priests and (male) religious, friars, seminarians.

Schedule: Silent retreat with two conferences per day, holy hour with confessions, Latin Compline, private Masses, table readings, and time to rest or go for walks.

About the preacher: Fr Armand de Malleray is the superior of the English apostolate of the Priestly Fraternity of St Peter, the chaplain to the youth movement Juventutem, and the author a dozen books on the priesthood, the Eucharist, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the liturgy, the fine arts, and fiction (cf malleray.com). Location: Stonyhurst is the oldest Catholic school in England, started in 1593. The beautiful architecture and grounds provide inspiration during our retreat, with access to the stunning St Peter’s Chapel. JRR Tolkien stayed there on several occasions, hence the “Tolkien trail”, a two-hour walk along the Ribble Valley starting from Stonyhurst. The college includes a museum with many significant relics such as the episcopal ring of Cardinal St John Fisher, which we venerated on a previous clergy retreat

External Solemnity of Corpus Christi

This Sunday's 1.00 p.m. Mass at Saint Patrick's, Bradford for the External Solemnity of Corpus Christi will be a livestreamed Low Mass. It will be followed by a procession  around the church and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

As June is the month of the Sacred Heart, we shall recite this Litany

The Blessed Trinity

 

Sunday's 1.00 p.m. Mass at Saint Patrick's, Bradford for the Feast of the Blessed Trinity will be accompanied by Mr Watson who used to play the organ for us at Saint Joseph's and Saint Patrick's until he retired three years ago. Father Driver asked me to invite George back and he readily agreed. The Mass setting will be De Angelis (missa viii). Many thanks to George for so readily agreeing.

I have been in Cologne this week and it is always a pleasure to hear Mass at the FFSP Maria Hilf church in the city's Chlodwigplatz area. It is a few years since we last attended Mass there, but reassuring that the congregation was (as in Cracow at Easter) made up of mainly young people including the celebrant who was also under thirty years of age.

When I lived in Germany 36 years ago religious sisters were a common sight in the cities and on public transport. In the past week I didn't see one religious in the traditionally Catholic cities of Duesseldorf or Cologne. A sad indictment of the times in which we live.

We are hoping to visit Brussels later in the summer where the Traditional Mass is available daily in several churches.

Pentecost

The late Father Parfitt of Sacred Heart, Broughton always began his Pentecost Sundays wishing everybody a happy birthday. Pentecost is the birthday of the Church. Acts 2:41 recalls the Apostles baptizing three thousand people after receiving the Holy Ghost when tongues of fire descended upon them.

This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday, next Sunday is Trinity Sunday and then we have the green Sundays until Advent.

Mass at Saint Patrick's for the feast of Pentecost Sunday at 1.00 p.m. will be a Low Mass. The father of one of my former pupils, very kindly, sent me some money at Christmas and I told him I would buy some new vestments with it. This red gothic set gets its first outing this Sunday.  Thank you, Michael!

There will be a Low Mass on Thursday (13th. May) for the Feast of the Ascension at Saint Patrick's at 7.00 p.m.

Easter IV

 

This Sunday's Mass at Saint Patrick's at 1.00 p.m. for the Fourth Sunday of Easter will be a Low Mass.

It is very encouraging to see so many new faces and young families at the Masses at Saint Patrick's. I think it would be impossible to say that the community at Saint Patrick's is anything but a stable group.

Easter II

Our Low Mass at 1.00 p.m. on Sunday at Saint Patrick's for the second Sunday of Easter will be a Low Mass.

Quasimodo Sunday

I hope everybody has had a joyful week. 

At the very last moment I decided to go to Krakow for a couple of days. I have, over the years,  attended the old Mass (and the New Mass) at several churches and chapels in and around Krakow, including the cathedral.

The old Mass is no longer offered daily at the cathedral, as the FFSP now have use of the Immaculate Conception church, which is in the typical Polish Baroque style on the Copernicus Street. 

On Tuesday, the evening Mass was missa solemnis and what the schola lacked in technique they made up for in volume and enthusiasm. Photo above. 

On Wednesday, it was missa lecta with our friends again accompanying the Mass with even more powerful organ accompaniment and undiminished vigour. 

On both evenings the church was touching full with the majority of congregants under 40. I was definitely in the minority age wise. 

At the Cistercian Abbey in Nowa Huta, I met a lay member of the diocesan synod who was more than sympathetic to the continued existence and promotion of the old Mass. He believed the new Cardinal of Krakow, Mgr Rys, is similarly disposed. 

It was charming on the way to the airport yesterday morning to see about 20 little kids in hi viz jackets crossing the road. Two by two these kids were holding hands as they walked behind and in front of highly recognisable and equally visible teaching sisters. 

Sunday's Mass is also called Low Sunday and Divine Mercy Sunday. 

The 1.00 p.m. Mass at Saint Patrick's in Bradford will be a Low Mass.

Easter joy!

 

The Easter Triduum is over for another year. It is always hard work but the rewards are incalculable . It would not be possible with out the clergy, servers and our cantatrix. Please may I put on record here my thanks to Fr. Frantisek who was our celebrant and the other friars who make us so welcome at Saint Patrick's. 

Tomorrow the 1.00 p.m. Mass is a Low Mass and will be livestreamed.

Good Friday

Things went very smoothly at tonight's Holy Thursday Mass and it was good to see so many new faces.

Like last year, Bradford City are at home, with kick off at 3.00 p.m.

Please set off a few minutes earlier if you are intending to come to the Liturgy at 3.00 p.m. Parking will not be affected by the match, but it will be busy along Manningham Lane and Queen's Road.

I shall go along Canal Road and up Hamm Strasse. 

The Sacred Triduum 2026

 

Once again we will use the liturgical books in use in 1962. Each day will have a sung liturgy.

The Mass of Holy Thursday at 6.00 p.m.

Good Friday at 3.00 p.m.

The Easter Vigil at 7.30 p.m.

Easter Sunday at 1.00 p.m.

Palm Sunday: the start of Holy Week.

The 1.00 p.m. Mass at Saint Patrick's for Palm Sunday will be preceded by the blessing of palms and the traditional procession. If the weather is unsuitable the procession will take place inside.

Passion Sunday. Lent V

This Sunday's 1.00 p.m. Mass for Passion Sunday at Saint Patrick's will be a Low Mass.

Next Sunday is Palm Sunday and weather permitting we shall have our outdoor procession. Palm Sunday marks the start of Holy Week and again we are very fortunate to have the Triduum at Saint Patrick's.
